Pastor Tony Spell Allegedly Whooped a Racist in Central

Pastor Tony Spell is back in the headlines, but this time the story is not as simple as an arrest charge.

Spell, pastor of Life Tabernacle Church in Central, was arrested Tuesday and booked on one count of second-degree battery after an alleged physical confrontation with a 20-year-old man near the church.

According to a source internal to the church, the incident followed claims that the young man had been making obscene gestures toward Spell’s wife and directing racist comments toward Black members of the church.

That context matters.

No one is above the law, and the courts will decide what happened legally. But there is also a human side to this story. A pastor protecting his wife and standing up for members of his congregation is going to be viewed differently by people who understand what it means to defend family, faith, and community.

Spell has long been a controversial figure in Louisiana, but even people who disagree with him may understand the instinct to respond when your wife is disrespected and your church members are allegedly targeted with racism.

The charge will now move through the legal process, and Spell deserves the same presumption of innocence as anyone else.

For now, the facts are still developing. But one thing is clear: this is not just another Tony Spell controversy. It is a story about race, respect, protection, and how far a man can be pushed before a situation turns physical.

Spell has not been convicted of any crime. The allegations remain unproven unless and until decided in court.
