Ryan Thompson’s Vision for a Safer, More Just Baton Rouge

When I sat down with civil rights attorney Ryan Thompson, I heard a candidate whose campaign is rooted in experience and service.

Thompson’s journey began in California, where he attended school in Inglewood and Compton before playing football at Southern Utah University. He later earned a master’s degree in public health from Charles R. Drew University in Watts and came to Baton Rouge for law school.

Today, he is a husband, father, civil rights attorney and advocate for people navigating the criminal justice system.

Now, Thompson is running for East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney on a promise of a safer, more just Baton Rouge. His priorities include focusing on violent crime, strengthening prosecution, protecting constitutional rights and ensuring justice is applied equally across communities.

For Thompson, this campaign is personal. He pointed to the killing of Danny Buckley, the BRAVE Cave cases and other families he has represented as examples of a system he believes has failed to deliver accountability.

In those moments, he stepped forward on the civil side. Now, he wants the opportunity to lead inside the District Attorney’s Office.

Thompson says his campaign is powered by volunteers and does not accept corporate money. That means this movement will depend on people willing to donate, volunteer, knock doors and vote.
